Social and Community Context

In 2022 Black people accounted for 15%, 4140 people, of bookings in the WCSO. When compared to the Black population of Washoe County this represents nearly one-third of the Black population.

Information for this and following graphs was found on the Washoe County Sheriffs Office website in its annual reports.

The percentage of arrests by race in the WCSO in 2021 and 2022 indicate that Black people are being arrested at nearly twice their percentage of the total population.

As a percentage of total use of force cases reported by WCSO, use of force against Black people in WCSO on average is 21%.

One out of every five Black people that interact with the WCSO may be subjected to some sort of use of force.
